How to Make Relocating Easier

Whether you’re relocating for a new job or moving across the country to be closer to family, moving poses tremendous challenges.  The prospect of uprooting your entire life is daunting enough, and moving an entire household only brings on more anxiety.  Whether it’s a last-minute move or you have months to plan for your relocation, the task of changing residences is stressful.  Thankfully, there are helpful hacks and tricks you can utilize to make relocating easier. Read on for tips on how to make a successful move easier and with less stress.

Know Before You Go

Before you pack one single box, first, do some research on your destination.   Even if you’re returning to your hometown, you should still refamiliarize yourself with the area because things always change. Make a list of essential services you’ll need before you get there. For example, take notes about utility companies, trash pickup services, or TV and internet providers in your new location.  Find out what the regulations are for changing your driver’s license or vehicle ID plates.  Make it easy on yourself by taking a web capture or screenshots of all these providers and keep this information in a dedicated file on your phone or computer so it’s easily accessible when you need it.

Pack Smarter Not Harder

Try to use smaller boxes whenever possible, and do your best to keep the bulk of your boxes one size. Smaller boxes can help you avoid sore muscles or strained backs as they weigh less.  Keeping most of your boxes the same size makes packing a moving truck more convenient.  Think about buying 12-packs of standard file boxes. These are sturdier than most moving boxes, they are easy to assemble and stack, plus they have handles to make carrying all your items a breeze. As a bonus, you can disassemble file boxes and reuse them in the future.

While on the subject of boxes, be sure to label all of them clearly. There’s nothing worse than getting to your new location and not having a clue where your favorite coffee mug is.  Label boxes such as “kitchen” or “bedroom” and write more specific identifiers if there is something really crucial in a particular box.  This will also save you time when you get to your new location because you can place the appropriately labeled box in its corresponding room.

Protect Your Breakables

Bubble wrap and tissue paper are useful when packing fragile items such as wine glasses or precious heirlooms.  While moving-grade protective wraps are effective, they can get expensive.  Make the most out of the materials you have on hand and are already destined to be at your new location.  For instance, pack breakables in bath towels, or bed sheets. You can also use clothing or pillows to pack with your delicate items to protect them from breakage.  Doing this will make the most of the space in your moving boxes as well as keep your valuables safe.

Get Rid of Unused Items

A handy rule of thumb to keep in mind while moving is this; if you haven’t used it in the last six months, get rid of it.  Holding to this guideline will help you cut down on a lot of waste, moving expenses and make your relocation less cumbersome.  Getting rid of seasonal items, broken trinkets, clothes that no longer fit or stuff that simply isn’t used anymore can streamline your move. Furthermore, you can feel good about giving your unused items to a charity and make someone else’s life better. Just make sure you don’t inundate charities with broken or unusable items, if something is broken or damaged it’s better to get a rubbish removal Sydney service to dispose of it for you.

Keep a Go Bag Handy

Let’s face it. Moving can be a chaotic experience, and things get lost in the hustle.  That’s why it’s smart to keep a go bag handy.  This is a bag that houses a first aid kit, travel maps, phone chargers, flashlights, batteries – all essential items you’ll need before, during, and after your move.

Stay Focused

No matter how many tricks or hacks you use to make relocating easier, in reality, something will go wrong.  The nature of moving is replete with unknowns, and it’s never a perfect affair.  When things get hectic, stay focused on the positives.  For instance, if you’re relocating for a new job, let that be your motivation to get you over the hurdles in a move.  Moving to a new location is packed with tons of opportunities for personal growth and new adventures.  Keep this in mind if things get shaky and remember the best is yet to come in your new location!
